"I'm sorry to hear that," she says seriously, knowing how devastating diseases could be. It was a fact of life for them, and she can only imagine it would have been worse near on a hundred years before. "It was one of the things we worried about the most with the soldiers and the war. What if they brought disease? I suppose we were right because I read a few years later there was a horrible epidemic."
