“How very strange,” Combeferre murmured, holding out a wine glass for Sybil. Was this what happened when cures were found for the diseases that once tormented men? Were they replaced with maladies more cruel and incomprehensible still?

Medicine did not work like that, he reminded himself. Medicine had logic. Disease had a source. But in such strange times, that was difficult to remember.
