It's more difficult than Sybil imagined, having Henri at the table with her
family so close and yet so far. She can see the way that Mary has sized him
up and then dismissed him as uninteresting to her and how Edith has done
the exact opposite. She might almost be jealous were she not so completely
sure where his affections lay.
Too late, she realises that Doctor Clarkson has been talking to her and
that her eldest sister is watching her oddly. Sybil tries to think on what
he's said, asking him to repeat himself and apologising for her
inattention. "If you're not well enough to come back down to the hospital
in the morning-"
"Oh, no, I am sure that I will be," she rushes to assure him. The last
thing Sybil wants is to not see Henri whilst they are here and to not be in
attendance at the hospital seems a punishment. "I think that I stayed up
too late, perhaps not enough for dinner?"
